November 1-5 will mark S.T.O.P.’s third annual Green Business Week – now with a new name! Get ready for a week full of events, lectures, and activities aimed at making the business case for sustainability.
S.T.O.P. is building on it’s success of last year’s Green Business Week, which aimed to sensitize students and faculty on the environmental impact of “doing business as usual”. Highlights of the week included:
- Lecture on Socially Responsible Investing by Ken Thorpe on behalf of the Social Investment Organization
- Mr. Pedro Avella speaking about opportunities in Sustainable Trade Finance on behalf of FAST: Finance Alliance for Sustainable Trade.
- An evening of learning, questioning, and debate, focusing on the future of business education and its role in shaping sustainable practices. The event brought together undergraduate students, MBA candidates, and McGill professors, Margaret Graham, Madhav Govind Badami, Warren Nilsson, Paola Perez Aleman and Jeroen Struben, and was moderated by Prof. David Lank, Director Emeritus of the Dobson Centre for Entrepreneurial Studies.
- Workshop on “Idea generation: How to get your idea from conception to market!” by Challenge Your World
- Pre-halloween costume swap
- Trip to Ottawa for C-Day : Fill the Hill, a peaceful demonstration and public plea for strong climate policy.
Green Business Week 2008 coincided CBC The Hour’s 1 Million Acts of Green Campaign. The week featured events which were free and open to all students and faculty members, encompassing various facets of management and looking at how sustainability initiatives can be taken in diverse streams of business. Highlights of the week included:
- Greenwashing lecture by Scott McDougall, president of TerraChoice Environmental Marketing
- Stef Berger speaking about CSR job-hunting and responsible employers
- Cheryl Gladu, Co-Founder of ECOCITE , explaining the risks and rewards in eco-development
- A professor panel featuring some of Desautel’s prominent thinkers in the realm of sustainability
- A movie screening of Sony Pictures’ Who Killed the Electric Car
- … and a fun clothing swap amongst students to close the week!
